Stripping a Wooden Frame with Oven Cleaner and Playing Cards for Matting Protection

Have you heard of this oven cleaner hack?
Stripping wood with oven cleaner.
All it takes is some prep work, spraying, scrubbing and some sunlight and a frame can be completely transformed!
I found this beautiful painted canvas at our local thrift store and knew I needed to bring it home with me.  Being that it was an actual painting, I wanted to be really careful with it, but I knew the frame wasn’t going to match my home decor.  The frame was stapled onto the canvas, as well, making it much more difficult to change up the framing.
Upon some thought, I decided to strip the wood rather than painting it, but I needed to somehow do it without messing up the matting.

You guys!  Check this out!  I tucked in playing cards all along the edging of the frame and between the frame and the matting to ensure extra protection!
Tuck, tuck, tuck…

Then I taped away!

Next, I grabbed a garbage bag and taped it over the painting and along the edges for even more protection!
Next, it was time for the Easy-Off Oven Cleaner!
I sprayed, then scrubbed, then sprayed, then scrubbed…  Bonus points if you use sandpaper!
I wiped away the excess with a little bit of water and soap and repeated the spraying and scrubbing.  At one point I put wet paper towel down just to let any strain absorb into the paper towels.
I then let the artwork/frame sit out in the sun for a few hours.
Look how great it turned out!!!!  The frame now compliments the painting now that it looks weathered and it fits perfectly in our home!
What do you think?!  I’d love to hear if you’ve tried this out!
Thanks so much for stopping by!
